All these women have the same problem: I want to, but I cant get myself to...In GIVING AWAY SUCCESS, Dr. Schenkel shows how these patterns fit into the broader context of the psychology of women. Intelligent, talented women who feel they are unable to move forward, who feel stuck - despite a conscious desire to succeed. She demystifies the psychological issues that cause many women to feel blocked from achievement by internal obstacles they cannot understand, much less articulate.Dr. Schenkel explains why such women lack confidence in their abilities, how they have learned helplessness, why their action is inhibited, why they fear failure, and why they lack self-assertion. And although these problems arent unique to women - men have them too - Dr. Schenkel also explains the profound difference in the manifestation of these issues between the sexes. Unlike mens socialization that clearly encourages achievement, womens socialization gives very mixed messages that inhibit action. Growing up female creates, for many women, internal obstacles to achievement.GIVING AWAY SUCCESS was first published in print editions (McGraw-Hill, 1984- revised edition, Random House, 1991- paperback, HarperCollins, 1992). The book was a selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, the Quality Paperback Book Club, the Psychotherapy Book Club, and Buchclub Ex Libris of Zurich. GIVING AWAY SUCCESS was translated into German, Chinese, and Portuguese. It went out of print in the beginning of 1995.Although much has changed since then, consistent feedback indicates that the book is still relevant and helpful. Recently, for example, a Spanish woman wrote, Your book was so inspiring to me that I translated it for my sister and other friends. In this rapidly changing and demanding world, its more important than ever that women are able to overcome internal obstacles and take action. The second half of the book teaches how do this. It describes practical strategies and techniques for getting unstuck, derived from Dr. Schenkels counseling practice and a field of psychology called behavioral self-management. These simple practices, carefully detailed and easy to follow, can help women manage their behavior more effectively and help them to achieve - rather than give away - success.
